The World Baseball Classic could not have ended any better. As someone who loves baseball since I was a kid, I could not have envisioned better theater (as Stephen A Smith would say).
This year’s classic I heard a little bit off and on but unfortunately due to other priorities — like March Madness — I was not able to watch all the games. But when Japan vs USA came up on my TV screen as the championship game I could not miss it. Who should I root for? Who will win? Who’s playing? All of these questions came to mind but ultimately when I saw my son start watching the game and rooting for Japan I had no choice but to join him.
I did not expect that Ohtani-san would close the game but when the 9th inning came up with him at the mound with the 3-2 lead, I was excited. Our house was literally pandemonium when Trout came to the plate and ultimately struck out with that nasty slider. But more than anything, I loved Ohtani-san’s reaction — how he threw his hat and his glove in a joyous and emphatic celebration with teammates. That’s what baseball should be about – two of the team’s best players going right at each one on one, Japan versus the United States. I will give you my best pitching and I’m coming after you swinging for the fences.
Congratulations Ohtani-san and Japan! Thank you for reminding me why I love this sport!
